There's no way for them to get to the OS. the autologin logs the back in, the program starts. If the users exits the program, they are automatically logged out by the exit command at the end of their profile. The programs are shell scripts that collect serial data from gauges. If the instructions call for bnot /b mounting the disks in rescue mode, then the LiveCD may well be usable for your purposes if you just boot it normally, log in, and 'su -' in a terminal to become root.
